Congratulations to Melbourne based painter Esther Stewart for her painting 'Flatland Dreaming', winner of the 2016 Sir John Sulman Prize.

The 25 finalists for the award this year included Arryn Snowball, Reno Reckie, Abdul Abdullah, Gareth Sansom, Peter O'Doherty, Madeleine Preston and George Gittoes.

Esther who is currently represented by Sarah Cottier Gallery has been exhibiting regularly since 2010 when she completed a Bachelor in Fine Arts, First Class Honours majoring in Sculpture and Spatial Practice at the Victorian College of the Arts

Esther gathered momentum and kudos from her early shows but it was a collaboration with Valentino Menswear that catapulted her on to the world stage when they translated her artworks in to their AW15/16 Collection. Brilliant.

Her works, known for their geometry and optical illusions, have quite a modernist feel and are done with painstaking precision.

You can see Flatland Dreaming along with all of the Sulman, Wynne and Archibald finalists and winners at the Art Gallery of NSW until the 9th of October.

Esther Stewart is also currently exhibiting in Melbourne at Heide III with a three dimensional diorama titled 'How to Decorate a Dump' which is showing until the 11th of September.

You can follow Esther's progress on Instagram here.
